Does anybody locally know of a good Fort Worth bakery, that could turn out a cake that would taste good? (Why yes, I was disappointed with the last time I tried a Walmart cake...)

Maggie has told me exactly what she wants for her birthday cake - white cake with white frosting, pink roses and "pink ABCs" and yellow candles.

Normally I'd want to bake the cake myself - but I can't do roses.

I <3 HEB cakes. There are two types of white frosting, elite, which is basically whipped cream frosting, and buttercream, which is my OMG favorite. Love them so much.

Alternatively, you might look to see if they sell little candy roses for her - I seem to recall a rack in front of bakeries that's usually decked out with that kind of thing, as well as a section in the baking aisle.

<3 HEB cakes.

HEB? What's that?

I went today to Hobby Lobby and walked up and down the Wilton cake decorating aisle, hoping for just that - no luck.

Are you serious?

HEB? Major San Antonio-based grocery chain stretching throughout Texas, with one in Mexico and one in Louisiana?

Wow. I seriously thought everyone knew about HEB. Follow that link, there's a store locator, it's possible there just isn't one close enough that you'd have noticed it.

Okay, weird. It's trying to make that link go to celticdragonfly.livejournal.com/www.heb.com, which isn't going to work.

Anyway, it's www.heb.com and follow links to their store locator.

Wow. The nearest one to you is 33.34 miles away.

That's nuts.

/me is puzzled.

DFW is one of the few Texas markets they haven't gone into -- too saturated with existing grocery chains. They've only relatively recently expanded into Houston (though they scored big there by reopening sooner than anyone else after Rita went through).

Nope - closest one is 37 miles away, way down past the south end of Fort Worth.

Doesn't Central Market (which I believe is part of the HEB family), and I know you've mentioned shopping there before, do bakery stuff?

Probably the same type of cake as HEB. Which, yes, is pretty good.

DV, who muchly misses HEB

I know about HEB because...

I have a HEB cookbook, a gift from your Grandmother Seiver. It is composed of recipies submitted by customers from all regions of Texas.

Hey, you know Eastern Star people out here, don't you? Any chance they might be able to recommend a good bakery?

Bluebonnet Bakery on the circle south of TCU on University. If University is at 6:00, the Fish Market (also excellent) is at about 2:00, the other end of University is at 12:00 and the Bakery is at 11:00. IF I AM REMEMBERING IT CORRECTLY!

I'll second the recommendation for Bluebonnet Bakery.

There's also a store on Camp Bowie, near the Arts District.

I looked it up for you.

3905 Camp Bowie Blvd FTW 76107
817-731-4233

It's on Camp Bowie just west of the big Lancaster, Montgomery Street intersection.

Perhaps you could mail order the roses? It seems one can buy gummi roses (who knew?) which have the advantage of being pretty inexpensive. Or you could get a rose candy molds if you're feeling crafty.

Finally, for a more modest expense, you can buy the durn fondant roses
themselves.

I used search terms: "sugar roses" and "fondant roses" - you can probably find other sources yourself the same way.
