celticdragonfly: (Firefly -River - I'll knit)
[personal profile] celticdragonfly
[livejournal.com profile] bkseiver sent me to the blog of a friend of hers, Dez, who I've heard bits and pieces about now and then. This entry:
http://mambocats.blogspot.com/2006/07/jury-duty-i-tried-to-console-myself.html

particularly amused me. I'm not likely to get called to jury duty any time soon, but I have friends who have dealt with it lately and may also be amused

Well, take your knitting. Consider it a gift of bonus time.

Oh, I will. If I actually have to go to Oakland, I'll need it on the train and in the waiting room. If I recall, they don't want us knitting in the actual courtroom. Goddess forbid I actually have to do that.

By all means, although feel free to continue - I like the idea of my journal being a friendly place.

What's a Weber FAQ? A Honorverse webpage or something else?

Back in the day, I played a lot in alt.books.david-weber, and maintained the FAQ for the newsgroup (I was the Mad Archivist), but now that I've gone inactive over there, I now have emeritus status. Not sure if this was why DW tuckerized me in the 8th Honor book, he told me at Chicon 2000 when I asked that he needed a Hispanic surname. I told him that I'm not Hispanic according to the census bureau because my family came from Portugal, but if this put me in the tradition of Dom Henrique the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, and Fernão Magalhaes (Magellan), I was delighted.

She raises a very good point...and if it were me getting constantly bugged by people about how bored they were while *sitting in a library*, I might have ended up being the one on trial...

Great link! Didja see her July 4th post? I'm gonna ask for permission to link *it* in my own journal. Both the speculative bit about four-needle sock knitting, and the true story from the Revolutionary War, deserve wider circulation, methinks!
