Having a discussion with a long-distance dear as to how we need a transporter, darn it, and why don't all these engineers in our lives build one already?

Me: if I could just *grow* one
LDD: LOL
LDD: too bad you can't knit one
Me: oh yeah
LDD: a 7-league shawl
Me: I can knit a mobius strip. I can even knit a klein bottle.
LDD: there you go, surely a teleporting pair of socks is not beyond you
Me: you know... I can't find some of mine. It's possible that I *already have* knit a teleporting pair of socks - and just didn't have them on at the right moment.
Me: of course, I don't actually know where they went, so maybe just as well.
LDD: LOL
LDD: the beta version
Me: It could be that many socks are teleporting, and we just think the dryer eats them.
LDD: that could be it!

My theory has always been that it's a matter of polarity. New socks are undifferentiated, but after they've been worn a few times they begin to be left socks and right socks. The problem is that left and right socks repel each other, and the more similar they are otherwise, the stronger the repulsion. Eventually, one of the pair is forced through the dimensional vortex which every washing machine contains.

I shall now have to label all my socks as "A"s and "B"s. Wearing A's on the left foot on odd-numbered days and on the right foot on even-numbered days should add years to their lifespan.
