Well, that wasn't in the plans...
Oct. 26th, 2003 08:54 pmToday's unplanned ER visit...
Went out this afternoon, all of us, to run various errands. We'd done the library one. We were stopping at Office Depot, to pick up a whole list of school supplies Brendan needs, and after that had plans for shopping for sheets for the new queensize mattress I'm buying for the nursery, and going by the mattress place to finalize details and delivery, and possibly a couple other spots.
Then Brendan ended up slamming the sliding van door on his right little finger, between the hand and the first knuckle. Poor kiddo. Crying a lot. Fortunately I remembered the realtor pointing out a close hospital when she drove us around the first day of seeing houses near the area. So off we went. He'd calmed down a lot by the time we got there, so I had high hopes it wasn't broken - but then, he has a frighteningly high pain threshold, and with finger joints you CHECK. So we went on in. He was very brave and very good. Paperwork was complicated by the move - um, yes, here's our address, sorta, we close on the house tomorrow - um, the phone's not hooked up til tomorrow, and won't have a phone attached until at least Wednesday, let me give you my cellphone - no, we don't have a local physician - well, yes, the insurance does cover him, but no I don't have a card for it, it's supposed to be in the mail to us...
Karl and I did a pretty smooth job of handing off kids and responsibilities as suited best - clearly, chasing Maggie around the waiting room was his job, giving history to the triage nurse was mine, as was paperwork. I caught up with him and the kids at the ER bed, and there he was entertaining the kids by blowing balloons up out of a surgical glove. He is such a great inventive Daddy. The doctor had palpated Brendan's finger and wanted an X-ray, which Karl accompanied him on - clearly I had no business being anywhere near the X-rays. They came back shortly to assure us that the x-ray looked just fine, he didn't break it, just a contusion. Whew. They taped his fingers together, recommended icepacks and painkiller. We had dinner, picked up some kid's Motrin for him, and came home.
So much for my errands. So much for having everything prepped and ready for tomorrow morning, when we all gotta get out of the house super early so Karl and I can meet up for the house closing at 9, where I suspect we will find out that the wire transfer didn't go through in time. Agh.
