Home Sweet Home
Oct. 30th, 2003 03:57 pmWe are IN the house now, and out of the hotel. Huzzah! Living in a wilderness of boxes. Moving trucks came yesterday
Unloading went reasonably well. We have not gotten the people to come hook up the washer and dryer yet. And the moving guys didn't do a great job of putting the bookcases back together - must have worked on that project in Pisa, I swear. Karl's going to have to redo some of them. Still, could be worse.
We got an unscheduled new fridge. There'd been a fridge included with the rental house, so Karl's old bachelor-AF-days dinky fridge had been stored in the garage. We'll just use that, said Karl, and agreed that yes, eventually we'd upgrade it to something nicer. So they brought it off the truck yesterday, and plugged it in. I opened the freezer very briefly, slammed it shut, and told Karl that it would need a major cleaning, and this would have to be performed by the family adult who was not subject to bouts of vomiting, i.e. the non-pregnant him. When he got to the house he checked it out and discovered a major nasty mold infestation. He looked VERY unhappy at the prospect of trying to get that out.
So I pointed out that hey, we'd just found out the other day that we actually got back most of the deposit from the rental house - a significant chunk of change that we'd written off as hopeless. We were astonished. So hey, did he want me to run down to Lowe's and pick out a new fridge that they could deliver today? I saw the temptation warring on his face - after all, HE'd have to clean out the old one. So he gave in. I went and picked one out. Had to bring him there later for the paperwork, but at least he didn't have to deal with picking one. Much bigger, 25.9 cu ft, and it has the in-door water and ice things, which this house is plumbed for. Lovely. They did deliver it today, and I've got to toss out the first gallon of water and first couple trays of ice. But after that, I look forward to enjoying it.
Last night Karl managed to get the babygate at the top of the stairs put up, whew. This morning he was working on the wide gates to close off the living room for a safe play space, but has run into some engineering challenges in making those work. Hopefully those will get overcome tonight.
I don't think it's completely sunk in that it's OUR house yet. And there have been some snags. I haven't gotten the A/C to kick in as strongly as I want, and the programming set ups for it have a lousy user interface. We may need to adjust the water heater - Brendan's and my showers were fine, but Karl's and Maggie's later on were not. There's VERY high lights in the foyer and stairway with (I presume) dead bulbs that we can't possibly reach on our own. Etc. But overall, boy, I am SO happy to be in our house!
