FenCon was MARVELOUS. [livejournal.com profile] selenite wrote a lovely post on it, and that covers a lot of what we did together. I'm not going to try to write a full con report - if I did that, I wouldn't have time to go do the things I promised I'd do, so I'm just going to toss up some random highlights that were especially fun for me.
  • Getting to meet [livejournal.com profile] taerin at long last!

  • Getting to see the PsychoPixie again, after ENTIRELY too long. What's it been, 4 1/2 years? yeek. It was good having dinner with her, [livejournal.com profile] abovenyquist, and [livejournal.com profile] joyeuse13. Poor [livejournal.com profile] selenite was stuck in traffic.

  • And then seeing [livejournal.com profile] patgund, squeeeing loudly and running over for hugs. He brought me FABRIC. COOL fabric. An embroidered silk dress blank. And a cashmere wool scarf. Pardon me as I put on my Fiber Snob face. Cashmere wool scarf, imported. Mine mine mine. Viewings available by appointment, wash your hands and I'll let you pet it.

  • Heather's Friday night concert was great fun.

  • Next year we need to get MORE people for Werewolf. Next year the gaming schedule seriously needs to get included in the programming book. What's WITH that? I'm twisting [livejournal.com profile] selenite's arm, and telling him he oughta volunteer, just to get that IN there.

  • And FILKING until wee hours. Yay. The kind lady who sang the Werewolf song by Lee Martindale that I heard at ApolloCon and adored, and who brought me lyrics the next night, thank you. I bought the CD, too, so I can learn it.

  • Saturday - when various people had thought I was nuts to get up so early after filking so late, I had to point out to Karl that [livejournal.com profile] msminlr was up and eating breakfast ahead of us, and she'd filked that late. He said yeah, I wasn't the only insane person. She was kind enough to show me a bunch more quilting stuff after breakfast and before her next panel. She showed me stuff last year, and more this year - more stuff specifically aimed at getting me past the fear of failing perfection that so many other quilters have been hitting me with and has totally stopped me from ever starting. I'm going to start cutting up those old calico outfits and just start ninepatching, darn it. [1]

  • the creating a song filk panel had fun stories

  • Saturday night filking - wheee! Yes, the circle was a bit big. Fun anyway. All sorts of bits. [livejournal.com profile] abovenyquist unknowingly setting [livejournal.com profile] meerkat1 and I up perfectly for the song we planned to sing anyway. [livejournal.com profile] kd5mdk getting Heather to do March of Cambreadth to the tune of Happening Frog (anybody who doesn't know the story of the reverse of this, lemme know and I'll explain). THAT was one of those fantastic moments.

  • The drummer next to Heather asking for reels - her leading a marvelous reel set, and me giving in and jumping up to dance reels - and a girl out of the Pod on the other side jumping up to dance too. She asked what I was doing, I said "random reel steps", and she had a dance in mind, so she just led and gave signals and I followed, and we did great. Yeah, she's younger and lighter and can bounce higher, but I had lots of fun. After a bit I realized I was getting out of breath, and since we'd gone into a lovely whirl, I could say to her that I was stepping out then - just as well, as the next moment they went to *double time* and I can't dance that anymore. Then right after that Heather was packing up - but I'd wanted to sing the song Cat Faber wrote for her, so I sang it as she packed up, You Work Too Hard. Whew, panting between verses.

I filked until almost 5 am. Whee.

  • Oh yeah, and meeting new filkers. [livejournal.com profile] taral is a TRIP, I like him. And [livejournal.com profile] roninjedi, man, he can SING. Wow.

  • I did NOT make it up for breakfast the next morning. I tried. Honestly. But brunch with a crowd of friends chattering away was marvelous.

  • I bought a new t-shirt, Come To The Dark Side - We Have Chocolate. And I wore it Sunday, since I knew I couldn't put my chocolate stash in the car, and I'd be carrying it around all day anyway. A couple kids figured out that I meant it - one kid came back 4 times, and brought friends. Fortunately I had lotsa chocolate.

  • I was also given a cool shirt, and two new books to read, thank you, [livejournal.com profile] patgund. And we bought CDs. And [livejournal.com profile] joyeuse13 made me a BEAUTIFUL apron, we just need to sew down the straps. And the matching one for Maggie. OMG this is going to be SO CUTE. And I love the mottled blue-green headscarf. Pretty!

  • Cons so need me to be cloned multiply. I think I need about 4 or 5 of me.

  • I want to help with filking next year. I have some ideas to help things flow a little more smoothly. If I can get over the "write to programming@fencon" problem I'll do it. I hate writing to a faceless box. I may be volunteering to be a filk person for the con, not dealing with concerts or anything like that, 'cause I'm so not qualified, just some stuff for the latenight filk circles. Possibly I'm *insane* to be considering this.

I am absolutely sure I'm leaving out cool stuff that happened that I should be writing, but heck, I'm posting anyway.

[1] (Hm. I was thinking I'd do it after this post [2] - but I realize I still need to replace the old rotary cutter, pick up a washable marker, and some needles. Maybe after this the kids and I go to Hobby Lobby.)

[2] Seriously. I'm going to do it. Feel free to nag me.

Great shirt buy!
when you are ready to cut the calico, consider if you want to do a "fussy cut" - that involves making a square template from some see-through plastic, like comes on coffee cans. (I KNOW you don't drink coffee - but they must go through tons of it at church. Or you could actually, cough cough, buy template plastic.) Anyway, you can center your square over a figure in the calico, thus get a nice flower in the center of your patch. I have one quilt done that way - a garden walk with a flower in the center of each hexagon - amazing! It was made by Agnes Zart Pierce, Grandpa Carl's sister. Another thought - you could make a "negative template" and draw inside a square - like the dough after a cookie has been cut out, dontcha know. All optional, of course.

I have the big fat ruler with the lip, and I bought a 6 1/2 inch grid square thingy. Between the two of those, I think I'm set for now. I think I want to do a pattern with triangles next - I saw a block I rather like. I need to figure out how to cut the triangles - can you just cut squares and slice them diagonally, or does that screw up the seam allowances?

I was, spending most of my time in the gaming area.

Which is where I'll probably be spending most of my time during ConDFW next year, so look for me there or at the hotel bar. :)

I think I was playing Venus Needs Men at the time - my girlfriend was one of the players in the game where you were using Zombies!!! minis for the Revaers that were swarming the ship.

If I had known, I would have asked you to give my regards to [livejournal.com profile] meerkat1. I would also have asked you to ask Heather Alexander what her song, "Shattered Glass," is about. I saw her at Balticona few years ago, and never remembered to ask.

If you'd told me, I could've asked her at DragonCon. Or, you can always email her at the webpage.

And I agree enthusiastically: [livejournal.com profile] meerkat1 rocks! [obLMB: and squishes pleasantly!]
