The poor baby
Dec. 6th, 2003 08:37 pmSo I decided I wanted to go out to eat tonight - I've actually had an appetite for the last few days. (Keep wondering if this means I'm about to have the baby, but as this is day 3 of this, I guess not.)
While we were out at the van, and I was standing there next to my open door watching Karl put Maggie into her carseat through the sliding door, I heard something and looked down - and there was a cat in the front of the car. Had a moment of thinking it was one of ours, and WHAT was it doing outside, and realized it was a stray, who'd smelled leftover food in the chickfila bag from Karl's morning trip, climbed in, and had her head in the bag. I exclaimed, and Karl chased her away.
We were left feeling very bad about it. Karl first saw this cat begging for food on Thanksgiving. He said from her looks and behavior that she did NOT start out feral. He has some VERY nasty words about people who desert/toss out cats. We both feel very bad about it, not wanting her to be hungry and cold - but we have 4 cats, a houseful, both by marital rules and the legal restrictions of this property. We cannot take in another. And if we just start leaving food out, that just makes the problem worse over time.
When we got back home from dinner, she was still skulking around. We'd been discussing maybe feeding, trapping, and taking her to the pound - there'd be a risk they'd put her down, but then, poor baby would at least have a couple of days of warmth and food - and given Karl saw what might have been her littermate dead on the road a couple days ago, not like her odds are that much better here.
Made various calls - the local pound doesn't reopen until Monday morning. If it was tomorrow morning, I'd have said trap her and keep her in the carrier overnight, but that's too long. So... we've put a box out with a towel in it, to shelter her from the wind, by the door, and some food in it. If she's still around Monday, we take her to the pound.
Poor baby. I agree with Karl. People who abandon cats are evil. I am reminded of the suggested death for kitten abandoners from _To Sail Beyond The Sunset_.

Abandoned kittens...
Date: 2003-12-07 03:47 pm (UTC)I wish it were possible to force people with un-neutered cats to have them neutered, rather than passing on the consequences of their selfishness and irresponsibility to others.
Grrr...
