shoe size? nope

Jamie's been having some serious clumsiness problems lately. He seems to be tripping over his own feet a LOT, and has fallen downstairs twice lately. (No significant injuries.)

We recently got Maggie new shoes, and found yes, her feet had grown. So we were wondering if maybe that was the problem, maybe his shoes were too short and that was causing him trouble.

So tonight after Kids' club I took him to a shoe store and asked them to check his size. They said he measures at a 9 1/2, so if we bought new shoes we should probably buy size 10 to give him some wiggle room, and oh, he needs wides.

The shoes he's currently wearing? Size 9 1/2 wide.

So no, that's NOT the problem.

This may be an overly obvious question, but have his eyes changed again? That's one of the first warning signs I get when it's time for new glasses... the astigmatism's all wrong and I start walking into walls and tripping over stuff. Or if his glasses are bent or crooked, that might be causing problems.

Or does he maybe have an ear infection or fluid in his inner ear that's causing dizziness?

I hope you guys can figure it out. Falling down all the time's no fun. Poor guy.

We had his eyes checked again in early February, and got him new glasses on Feb. 15th. The farsightedness prescription was the same, the doctor added a mild astigmatism correction. I'd hope he'd be used to it by now, over a month later. We have had problems with them - they're not too bent up, because they're the fancy titanium don't-break ones, but we've had a lot of problems with the pads - the soft pads kept coming off, and then would cut up his nose, they replaced it with hard pads that stay on but are still leaving him with a lot more red marks on his nose than I think is really okay. So sometimes he's not wearing them all the time - but we try to get him to wear them as much as possible. And he's been wearing them most of the time, it's not like he's just tripping when they're off.

I don't *think* he has an ear infection, but we'll keep an eye on things.

Unless he spends a lot of time spinning around when you aren't looking or something. Heh.

I got glasses when I was in 2nd grade for myopia, but I've had problems with astigmatism even before then. When I was younger, I ran into walls so often my mom thought I had serious visual problems or was retarded or something. I wasn't myopic then, but I was astigmatic, although I guess they couldn't figure that out at the time or something. Anyway. My first thought when a kid suddenly gets clumsy is vision.

I'm babbling. I'm sorry. I'm going to head off to bed now. Good luck figuring out what's causing the clumsies.
