And we're home. Finally.

It was a good trip. It was good to see my family, and enjoyable to just relax and veg out a lot. And spend lots of evenings playing card and other games with the family. And I was really glad to have the chance to spend some time with my sister Robyn.

But it's also good to be home.

We did manage to head out of Baton Rouge earlier than we'd headed out of Fort Worth on the way there, by two hours, but it was still a hellish drive. We have to stop frequently with the kids, of course - and once you've had the two diaper changes, me feeding Jamie on one side while Karl makes a pit stop, my stop, feeding Jamie the other side, then oh my we need two more diaper changes... well, they end up being LONG stops. Which makes for a really long drive.

One cool thing we realized today - Maggie is 18 months old, and Jamie is 18 days old.

By the time we got to the Tyler exit on the 20, it was late, well after dark, and we were exhausted. And the kids had been screaming a LOT. Poor dears. We stopped for gas, and planned to stop for a drivethrough - and by the time we were done at the gas station, we'd talked each other into going to a hotel room. We'd collapse, have a relaxed evening, and finish the drive in the morning, in decent light and better rested. There were several hotels right there near the 20. We went to the nicest one, which had interior hallways - oh good, we'd be able to let Maggie run around with Daddy following her some. I went in to check in while Karl stayed with the kids. Came back and said "Hi, Joseph". He got it, no room in the inn - the lady in front of me got the LAST room, and they'd had the hotel next door call ahead to check. Town was apparently now sold up. We drove on and checked in the next town - same thing, nothing available. Agh. So we had to go back to just driving all the way home, with us exhausted, driving in the dark, and the kids miserable.

Maggie screamed a lot. A LOT. I'm surprised she didn't lose her voice. Karl said if we'd been able to tape record it, it would have guaranteed her acceptance at IOU (Illuminati University), in the Department of Hysteria.

But now we're home. The house is still here, intact, and with four live cats, so that's good. The study entrance baby gate is down, so that needs to be fixed, but could be worse. Large piles of mail, of course, will have to finish going through those in the morning. Brendan comes home Sunday, and we'll be glad to see him.

Oh, various pictures from the trip are up.

We just knew that if anybody replied to this post, it would be you... ;-) Been meaning to get back to you on it.

Scholarship, how lovely. We're known for whispering "scholarships! scholarships!" subliminally in the kids ears after we put them to bed. (No saving for college until we're out of debt)

Yesterday Karl was playing chase-Maggie-around-the-living room, and stopped dead to stare at her, listen to her shrieks, note that she tripped, and comment "She's going to be a horror movie actress!" Yep, Department of Hysteria, definitely.
