Okay, why is it while the kids are watching Sesame Street, Cookie Monster's incorrect grammar doesn't bug me, but Elmo's incorrect grammar makes me want to hunt him down with an assault rifle?

(The kids are getting results, though. Maggie's reading started really improving quickly. And Jamie can read letters and numbers quite well. I just wish there were more of the actual seasons available, especially the old ones.)

Maybe it's the accent.
CM sounds more like someone who speaks English as a second language, while Elmo sounds like a very young native-speaker. I seem to recall reading that Elmo is designed to come-across as about a 4-year-old.

I suppose that could be it. An adult who speaks English as a second language isn't my responsibility to correct unless they've asked / we've discussed it. The four year old would be. I'd never allow a four year old of mine to speak that way. Come to think of it, they never did follow that pattern.

Cookie Monster is also... Hm. His voice doesn't grate. Elmo's voice would grate on me if he were reading Bujold books. Elmo just comes across as "I am soooooo cute, and I babytalk! And it's cute! And I am cute!" While Cookie's all... "Me want coooookie!" Un-selfconscious gluttony, yay! O:>

But hey, I liked Oscar best.

If you get Noggin, you can watch Play With Me Sesame, which features muchmuch less Elmo. But if you don't get Noggin, we're really liking SuperWhy and Between the Lions on PBS. Lots of good reading instruction and fun stories too. :)

What is Noggin? Some sort of game system?

I don't have access to PBS - our tv is essentially a display for the vcr, dvd, and Miles' computer-hard-drive video-box thing.

So for us, Sesame Street has been the dvds and tapes we can check out from the library system - and we've pretty much run them dry, except for the Spanish language and "Elmo's World" ones, which I am NOT getting - and the 1 season (35) that was available on TV Torrents and I gleefully snagged.

I *wish* somebody would put up the earlier seasons, the stuff from when I was a kid. There was one library DVD with the first show of each of the first 5 seasons - and it came with a disclaimer of being for adult nostalgia only, not suitable for kids! Eeek, silly people.

I HATE Elmo. Elmo to me is very much what's wrong with Sesame Street. He's whiny, irritating, and has a "Me Me Me Me!" attitude that I strongly believe does more harm than good.

As near as I can tell, Elmo was solely created to sell merchandise.

This is why I desperately want somebody to put up old Sesame Street seasons on TV Torrent - pre-Elmo.

As far as I can tell, Elmo is Chibi-Grover, tarted. And I adore Grover. So Elmo's very existence grates on me.

And it's possible I should be embarrassed to be a childless 35 year old ith such strong opinions about Elmo and Grover, but I'm not :)

I felt like that...

About the Junie B. Jones books my niece read in...first grade I think? Junie's words are funny, but they're not correct. Maybe Ramona Quimby's weren't either, but I don't remember them being as bad!!

I'm fine with Elmo. It's Baby Bear that I can't stand.
