Never heard of the song - or the singer before. Why that song? I couldn't find lyrics or a sample - all google helped with is that it's written by Maggie Holland, and a lot of people seem to like it.

The narrator's remembering a man who lived near her family and who made gardens that kids could really play in, who welcomed children when they ran around the flowers and climbed his trees rather than shutting them out. With a little metaphor thrown in -- I don't have the album here at work, so I can't remember the precise lyrics. It's a song I could see making Maggie think of you in another twenty-thirty years.

I'd say "Lady of Shalott" by Loreena McKennitt, but the line "singing in her songs, she died" doesn't apply at all.

At any rate, June Tabor has this wonderful dark smoky voice and is the other woman in "Silly Sisters" with Maddie Prior. She sings alto. She's also fond of songs where there's at least one death and nobody gets laid (a good description of most Child ballads), so I like her work very much. You'll laugh-- she's a librarian from Northumberland and never gave up her day job.

"I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" (from a Coke ad in 1972) - because the carolers sang it when you were in the hospital for an adenoidectomy, and you were so pleased - a song you knew and liked.
