So Brendan's socks in the rainbow yarn are progressing well. I cast on, knit a few inches, tried it on him, and frogged it all out twice, but this third time seems to be the right one. Apparently in fingering weight ribbed socks his cast on is 56.

I didn't want to distort the rainbow stripes with the french heel, and I think the short row heel would distort it just as badly, so for the first time I'm trying the afterthought or peasant heel. That's when you get to where you'd start the heel, then knit across the heel stitches with some waste yarn, then knit again across the waste yarn with your working yarn. Then later you come back, remove the waste yarn while picking up the stitches of the working yarn on needles, leaving a hole where the heel would be, and knit it shut the same as knitting a toe. I'd never done it before.

I decided it would be a lot easier to try the sock on Brendan for length once the heel was there, so once I'd gotten a couple of inches past the waste yarn spot, I let the body of the sock sit on the circular needles, and used my double points to pull out the waste yarn and pick up the heel. Note for the future - never let the last row before the waste yarn be ribbing. Do one row of just plain knitting for the back. It's a PAIN picking it up from ribbing. I went ahead and knit the heel, in solid PURPLE - hopefully this will go well with the rainbow of the main yarn - and finished it this morning. It looks good. Now I'm back to working along the foot of the sock, hopefully will have it long enough to start trying it on Brendan for length tonight, so I can do the toe. Then for the second sock I can just match the first and I won't need to try it on him. I'm going to do the toes in purple to match the heels.

I haven't neglected things for this - Maggie's up, had breakfast, bathed, dressed, cuddled, napped, and is now having a snack. Jamie's still asleep, bizarrely enough, if he's not awake shortly I'll go wake him and bathe him. He's only sleeping 3 hours in a row at night, dunno why he's napping so long now. I did dishes, have laundry in washer and dryer, got all the dirtly laundry from upstairs gathered and downstairs in the hamper, and put 4 loads of laundry away.

On a bad day I don't get anywhere near that much done all day! (This is why I end up with all those loads of laundry waiting to get put away.)

Haven't gotten much more done since then - a library trip with the kids, lunch, some more knitting.
