Anybody like to adopt a nice, friendly, outgoing people-oriented cat? Probably she's a Birman, which is like a fluffy Siamese.

Karina (and her brother Rorik) are almost 5. I have two older cats, too, who have just turned 14. I've always believed cats and kids go together - I grew up with a cat, and Brendan grew up with my 2 older cats. Karl and I adopted Karina and Rorik when we were living out in Lompoc, way before we had Maggie.

Nowadays Maggie is crawling around and toddling some. When she was tiny, Karina seemed interested in her, and even solicitous. Now things are not going well. Rorik tolerates her, will put up with her doing occasional tail or fur pulling, as we stop her as best as we can, and if it gets too much, he wanders off. The older two are more cautious and stay out of her reach. Karina will neither tolerate her nor avoid her.

Karina is such an outgoing little attention-cat, she always wants to be in the room I'm in - even when it's the living room and Maggie's play area. (As opposed to elderly Pixel, who makes a point of seeking me when Maggie's taking a nap.) She doesn't move away if Maggie comes up to her. In fact, she'll often walk right up to Maggie, today I saw her literally walk by and run her tail right through Maggie's outstretched hand. But she doesn't tolerate Maggie, and has scratched her several times. Today I hadn't seen her come into the room. She'd plopped down in a sunny spot, and Maggie crawled up to her - I hear her yowl, and look up, to find a confused Maggie with three scratches on her face, one of which was deep and drew blood.

I suspect Karina, who loves attention, is jealous of Maggie. She's starting to get more aggressive with me, too. I'll go to play with her and she'll nip me. And we've noticed her picking fights with Pixel - I think that's because the poor elderly boy was sick recently, and got some extra solicitous attention from us when we could spare it from Maggie, and now she's jealous of him, too.

She's a sweet cat, she really is, and very people oriented. She just needs to be somewhere that she can be more the center of attention. And I don't think she's going to handle the baby any better. As Maggie toddles better, it may become even more of a problem. There's just no way I can give her the kind of attention that I used to.

I think we're going to have to find another home for her. I hate to think of it, but at the same time... that could so easily have been Maggie's eye as her cheek. We're going to be contacting the Siamese Rescue Center out here in CA.

Thanks. I'd love to place a cat with you someday - I maintain you need a cat - but I could not recommend one who isn't handling babies well, so not Karina. She has handled Brendan just fine, but then he doesn't take up as much of my attention.
