So I've been studying my geography this last couple of days, thanks to the online quizzes at http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games_menu.htm . Good resources for homeschooling, those will be.

I'd first seen links from my flist to the US States one. I played with that, and set Brendan up with that, he did very well. [livejournal.com profile] 17catherines was complaining a bit of some of the oddities of the US states and their shapes, Maryland was mentioned in particular.

Then today, when [livejournal.com profile] kd5mdk was still here, he found the European ones. I have been working with them this afternoon to refine and update my knowledge of European geography. [livejournal.com profile] selenite just got home, and I was telling him, wow, [livejournal.com profile] 17catherines thought Maryland was weird, she should look at Croatia! What were they smoking?

[livejournal.com profile] selenite replied, "gunpowder". Heh. I am amused.

Heh - I've been playing with Europe all day, actually! I'm up to Level 7, now. Croatia looks a bit like Serbia kept on encroaching more and more into the borders, until it didn't have much left except borders... Somehow, weird European countries bother me less, because I know they were all fighting it out for territory - I don't think the same thing applies so much within the US (at least, I hope not!).

I like the little island of Russia that hangs out near Latvia and Lituania, myself. And all the teeny-tiny countries. Though Maryland is still pretty special in my view...

Catherine, Eurocentric, I fear...

I think Vermont and West Virginia are our main cases of that.

Yes, the Treaty of Versailles where Croatia was carved half out of Hungary and half out of the remaining Principality of Croatia is much cursed in Central Europe and not just for Croatia.

Thanks for the head's up to the European quiz, I'll have to go see how badly I mash that up.

I rather think it should be given back to Germany as East Prussia, and the locals ought to agree. But I suppose that's unlikely.

Geography Olympics (at geographyolympics.com) (http://www.geographyolympics.com/challenge.php)

You can play 3 times per day, for score, or as many times as you want, for fun.

Try it.
