So today Jamie, Maggie and I went to the Tarrant County courthouse and got a copy of his birth certificate. (I have now nursed Jamie in the TC courthouse...) It was a bit odd. I don't think they're used to getting births from the city of Saginaw. I think it's pretty rare. The one lady was trying to tell me they didn't have it, and I was telling her I'd called first and confirmed that they did - and the lady I'd talked to on the phone had to end up explaining to her "you know all those cities we do death certs for? We do birth certificates for them too." But then most births would be hospital births, in the city of Fort Worth, and those would be at the City Clerk's office. Saginaw doesn't have a hospital, and I guess they don't see that many home births. The lady was apologetic about having to print the birth certificate on this really long form - it looks kinda strange, this short form in the middle of this sea of empty official form paper. What she didn't say, but I infer, is that usually they only have to print up death certs, which I guess are longer. I said as long as the Social Security office accepted it I didn't care!

So my Texas boy is official now. Huzzah. Now I have to figure out where to go to get his SS#, and to give them changes of address for the rest of us. THEN we can get going on our taxes.

craving

So I had the oddest craving today - as I walked out of the Tarrant County courthouse, I suddenly was seized with a craving for a really good sub. Ideally a pepperoni and provolone sub with oil and vinegar, like I used to get in high school. I suspect it's my subconscious dredging up sensory memories - I recently heard from an old friend I met in high school at Morristown, and we used to go get subs at Long John's (how long is he? as we'd ask. Highschoolers, what can I say.) That was my favorite.

I was briefly in New Jersey back in '99, when we'd come to Long Island so Karl's mom could throw a belated wedding reception for us with her friends. We took side trips, Karl showed me Boston where he'd gone to college, and I showed him the areas where I'd lived in Summit and Morristown, NJ. I had to stop and get a sub while we were there. It was a fun trip. Showed him some of the Revolutionary War historical stuff while we were there, that was enjoyed by both of us, and his my favorite farm store. Now I have NJ on my mind again. Hope I can get back there sometime, but with 3 kids to juggle and my hatred of flying I doubt it'll be anytime soon. I want to take Karl to where I was born and went to college in Michigan someday, too.

So we're actually looking into getting cleaning help for me occasionally. (Why yes, this does make me feel like I'm not achieving enough. But... 2 kids under 2. And if I want to homeschool someday, I can't have housework be my top priority.)

The lady offered to send me references, and I accepted. I've never called references before. I'm sure I really ought to.

Anyone? What do you ASK these people?

So I'm holding Jamie in the traditional up-aganist-my-shoulder position, and he's holding his head up. And thrashing with it. Keeps bopping it sideways and banging his head into my cheekbone. Ow.

This time he just kept wiggling down and sideways until he had his head at chest height and was sorta lying sideways - I think that's a hint. Off to nurse.
