Walk!

I have thought now and then about trying to get back in slightly better shape. I would prefer to swim laps regularly, but don't have any good way to achieve that. I'd been thinking about getting back to walking, now that Texas is going from the OMG HOT summer into the brief pleasant fall. (And very brief, as I remember from previous years. I haven't been here that long, but so far the fall here seems to very quickly go windy with a bite.) Also, I recently got those amazing walking shoes, best to take advantage of them.

I'd been talking about [livejournal.com profile] cadhla's songs, and how she apparently composes a lot of them while walking, so it would be cool to listen to many of them while walking. This got me thinking about mp3 players. And I have now been loaned one by a friend until I get my own. So I picked up a cheap pair of headphones today. [livejournal.com profile] selenite is still home sick, he went to the doctor and got Meds today, and thought he was up to kid minding. I loaded the mp3 player with a selection of bouncy music - not just [livejournal.com profile] cadhla's, a big mix, although sometime I ought to try just hers. I nursed Alanna and left her sleeping in the swing, and headed out. The first song it loaded as I was leaving the house was the Gallagher Lass, which I always amusedly think of as Maggie and Jamie's song.

I enjoy walking with music. It keeps me moving. I don't do exercise that I dislike, it's just not going to happen. I walked down to the nearby long park and walked most of the way down it. I would have liked to walk all of it, but realized no, I wasn't up to that yet, so I turned around and headed back.

I find that I have enough marching band habits left over that if I'm walking on the beat of a song, but have my right foot on the primary beat and the left foot on the secondary, I must do a little hop-jog and reverse it. Honestly, an Elvis-JXL remix of A Little Less Conversation isn't much of a marching band song! But having thought that, I found I was stuck mercilessly in 8-to-5. So what the heck, I started creating an imaginary flag corps choreography to go with it. Anyone driving past at that point must have really thought I was insane. Heee.

The moment I get going with a song with a faster beat, and feel like hey, I'm striding out here, good for me! That is the moment that Miss Superfit Jogger goes zipping by. Oh well, I was having way more fun than it looked like she was doing.

As best as I can tell from perusing Google, I walked about 3 miles, in about 50 minutes. I came home and took a nice shower to get unsweaty. I have big blisters on the back of both heels, that's a downer, and going to make it tricky to do it again soon. Opportunities like this won't come along often, though, I'll have to take Alanna in the stroller or something. Dearly though I love carrying her in the sling, I don't think I could do 3 miles or more with her, she's *heavy*.
