This afternoon, after designing a clock for the nursery on CafePress (which I haven't ordered yet - still dithering) I poked around some of the clocks other people did. I'm going to share some of the links. (Although honestly, some of this is so I can close all these windows and reboot this *&%)^*%$ machine)

http://tinyurl.com/5pwls "Mariner's Compass" clock from a quilters CafePress shop - I rather like this one. [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver, you might like it.

http://tinyurl.com/6tf8l "Waiting for the Opportune Moment" - it amused me

http://tinyurl.com/6pqtp Drumline clock - [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver and [livejournal.com profile] phoenix_singer, you'll probably be amused, too.

I remember all the difficulty Robyn had in learning to tell time because so many clocks were either digital or didin't have the numbers on the face. I suggest that it have a simple background - perhaps the Mariner's Compass - and all the numbers. After all, this may be the clock the kids see the most.

The clock for the kids' room MUST have numbers, absolute. The Mariner clock is someone else's work, I can't put numbers on that one. But I could put numbers on anything I design myself.

is what I've done for us so far. But I'll take other ideas.

I might want to use the compass clock elsewhere in the house, but not in the nursery.

The kids do regularly see the downstairs chiming clock from the living room. I definitely want them to learn to tell time on analog clocks, yes.

If you let me know what colors/pictures you're looking for I might be able to send you a pretty jpeg. I do illustration in my copious (laughs maniacally) spare time. Seriously, though, I do have a massive portfolio/backlog of images that you're welcome to use.

Also, I'd no idea that cafepress let you do your own designs, so after I bought the one I'd been working on (and that I expected to have to go to Kinko's and do the fargin' iron-on-transfer thingummy), I sent you a $5 e-mail coupon to say "thanks". If this was a bad idea, let me know and I'll never do it again, but I thought since you were working on a project anyway it might help.

Thanks for the coupon.

If I do the "All True Wealth is Biological" clock, I'm actually pretty happy with the one I designed. That one is a variant of what I used for a shirt for Maggie to wear to the list party we hosted at FenCon. Her name is Maggie Rose, and she adores pink, so that's me acknowledging my own marvelous wealth. Plus I put the numbers on, see Mom's discussion with me about that above.

I'm trying to decide if I want to come up with any better idea for illustrating the clock. The room is done in blue with white sponged clouds, and Winnie the Pooh curtains. I can't do any WtP stuff, I don't have copyright, and the stuff already out there that I've found has been way too overdone for my tastes. I could do a blue clock with white clouds, but it might just disappear on the wall.

S'okay, that's actually one I'm thinking of getting for my workroom - I just thought it would show you what my artwork looks like, so you'd know if my style was to your taste.

I get the bit about the numbers, too. Makes sense that you'd want them clear and easy to read. Very pretty design, btw.

Since the clocks have strong black borders, I don't think it would blend into the backround. The problem would be that it would appear as if you'd wanted it to blend in but hadn't quite done the trick. Best to go with a clear, but coordinating contrast, as you've done. One possibility to tie the two together is to give the rose a soft matching blue backdrop that fades to white before it hits the numbers.
