I refilled the birdfeeder again Monday afternoon. Karl got a different type of birdseed, I don't think it's as optimal, but they're still eating it so I suppose that's fine. We're getting doves, finches, red-headed finches, chickadees, and the occasional red-winged blackbird. Maggie enjoys watching them, and is learning their names. So good, she'll know more birds than I did as a child - I really only knew robins and cardinals! The screen grids we put up over the ventilation ducts show signs of having been attacked but having withstood it, so yes, it was the right thing. The birdhouse we put up is definitely now inhabited by chickadees.

Oh, speaking of birds - we were going out and about Sunday late afternoon (Karl's mother is visiting) after the photo session. We went and took some pictures of our own at the arboretum, but it was starting to rain. So since it was a little early for dinner, we drove down and went around the Country Club/golf course neighborhood - Maggie Sr. and her husband are into golf, and they aree pretty houses to look at. I had the thought of showing them a pretty neighborhood I recently discovered by serendipity behind my favorite library branch, and I'd been wanting to show it to Karl, anyway, so we drove down there. We drove around, admiring big pretty houses, discussing how the area was laid out and such, and came out to Bellaire, where I was going to turn right on the boulevard to get back out to Hulen street - and there across the street was a pair of wild turkeys! We took a couple pictures, drove down and turned around to come back on the other side so we could get closer and take more. They DO make a sound just like "Gobble, gobble"! And we were pointing them out to Maggie, and telling her what they were. The whole thing had me thinking of 1776 (the musical) and Ben Franklin wanting the turkey to be our national bird. I wish they had, seems like too many places have the eagle anyway.
