Tonight is the 2nd Friday of the month, so once again it was "meet the animal" night at the local Borders books, thanks to the Fort Worth Zoo. (Gratuitous plug - it's a really cool zoo, if you're ever in town.) Tonight we got there in plenty of time and were well-positioned early. They brought a red-tailed hawk. I've really been looking forward to it. What a magnificent bird! Still young; the handler wasn't sure if it was male or female yet. Every time it flew to or from the perch, or bated on his glove, Maggie would start giggling. She talked to me a lot about the bird! The big bird! Look at the big bird! We learned lots of cool things about them, also about Harrier hawks. Apparently most of the hawks we see - and we do see plenty - are likely red-tailed. I so enjoyed myself, at least as much as the kids were. (Having kids makes a great excuse for this kind of things.)

On the way home I remembered that he said he looks for them on the 35 on light poles, so I looked on the 820, and saw one. Well, a raptor of some kind, anyway. Maybe settling in for the night.

Next month they will have owls and "other animals" tying into the Harry Potter release. I'd like to go, but had not realized that was the SAME night that the next Potter book goes on sale at midnight - might be too crowded for my tastes.

They didn't have Hallowed Hunt, which I chatted with an employee about - she checked, they sold out their first batch and are ordering another, although only one. They seem to have gotten the problem with filing "Lois McMaster Bujold" under McMaster cleared up now, though.

I got a salad at the Central Market before we headed home, just ate it - yummmm! (Some people make salads that are good for you. I make salads that are good.) They were doing a Friday night outdoor thing with a band and burgers and such and beer. I don't care about the beer, but the rest of it looked like fun. If there'd been a shorter line for the burgers I'd have been awfully tempted to grab one. If I was single, I think I'd try hanging out there on a Friday night.
