Books, need books!

Well, I've just plunged through the seven main Liaden books. Chapbooks, I'm gonna need chapbooks. Right now I'm wondering if I can talk Karl into preordering the hardback version of the collection of Liaden chapbook stories. (Everyone's heard my rant about trade paperbacks, right? Thought so) Maybe if I do the big wide cute eyes thing at him.

I have two Taltos books left. Well, one and a half. And a couple library books, one the first of a series by a forensic anthropologist, the one that's getting a series this fall. (Something to make me actually want to see TV. Pity, I can't.) Hm, I realize I've been putting that one off. I wonder why?

Oh, wait, I also have the play version of Busman's Honeymoon. Which I need time to read, WITHOUT the kids around, because it is delicate and fragile, and then I have to mail it back. Given that most of my reading time these days is while eating, in the bathroom, or with a kid climbing over me, I don't dare. selenite, honey, help me remember to carve out cave time JUST for that book.

The local library doesn't have the Crystal Soldier Liaden book, or Balance of Trade, although the latter is apparently on order. Just not requestable yet.

Then I'm going to need to find MORE! Or start doing more rereading. I've been doing such a good rate of NEW books this year, I hate to lose momentum. Maybe I'll love the books by the forensic anthro lady. I wonder why I'm putting that one off?

I have to go drop off books at the library today and I don't have anything to pick up. Feels a bit distressing.

I read the first one by the forensic anthro lady, Deja Dead. It didn't do much for me, although YMMV, of course.

I could loan you the chapbooks, you know. I do wish y'all were coming here for Dragon Con!

The chapbooks are also available as ebooks, but I don't like reading on screen so much.

That's the one I have in my library bag but haven't started yet. We shall see.

Loaning the chapbooks sounds good - although Karl did say I can order the compilation. I'm still occasionally wandering through the company's webpage, trying to figure out which stories are Liaden, and which are in which collection, and which I want?

Karl was hoping to go to DragonCon, but decided it was going to be too expensive. And given the bunch of extra expenses that have landed on our heads lately, I'm afraid it was a good call. From all I've heard of DragonCon, I think it and I are probably fundamentally incompatible. Too big too crowded too much.

I'm not very DragonCon-compatible. I know this about myself. That's why I'm hoping to find someone staying at the hotel who'll let me hide in her/his room for some periods during the day if necessary.

The fact that the Liaden authors will be there this year is what made me decide to go at all. I didn't figure I'd ever get a chance to meet them :-)

Aw, the Liaden authors are going to be there? Cool.

Sigh, even so I don't think I could handle it. And we can't really afford it. And no WAY we could go to something like that with the kids.

There's a decent chance Dawn Benton [president of ASFS] will be at the house-filk next weekend. If you're there as well [hint, hint, 'cause I'm subtle like that], I can introduce you. Dawn stays in town for Dragon. Her room will be full at night, but you can probably arrange to rest up in there during the day. celticdragonfly met Dawn at FenCon last year.

Chapbooks 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 - all stories are Liaden
2 - three Lute & Moonhawk stories. Not quite Liaden, but they have bearing on the Priscilla/Shan relationship.
4, 7 - one Liaden story, one Lute & Moonhawk story each
9 - one Liaden story, one about a non-Liaden character's early life on another planet (she joins the Liaden stories later)
The Cat's Job - one Liaden story, two this-earth stories

How do these overlap with the collection of chapbooks that is coming out in September? Does it have all the Liaden ones?

I am muchly curious about this whole Lute and Moonhawk thing.

I believe that collection contains the first 5 chapbooks, plus the Liaden story from The Cat's Job.

If you're looking for new books to read, have you tried Jasper Fforde? The Eyre Affair, etc.

I have just purchased my copy, as a post yesterday in their journal indicated they were down to 85 or so hardbacks from the initial planned run, although the trade paperbacks had some 800 unclaimed. I fear they miscalculated the likely balance of orders/the willingness of fans to wait for a superior form factor. So, I'd suggest that there may not be too much time left to order a HB.

(On the other hand, maybe there were only 150 HBs. I don't know)
