I got to try to explain Veteran's day to Maggie this morning. I figured she was old enough for me to start, anyway, although I don't think she'll get it for years. She looked quizzical. We'll keep at it every year. I expect tonight when we're all home we should have one of our traditional holiday oratories and read something appropriate to them. Flanders Fields, I expect.
My deep thanks to all the veterans out there. I know my safe protected life doesn't come free.

Date: 2005-11-12 04:23 pm (UTC)I have a clipping from a For Better Or Worse strip that I think dates back to before 2000. It shows Elly and little April walking on a street, and an old man selling poppies. The little girl asks her mother either why people are wearing them or why he is selling them (I forget which, and I'll have to dig up the strip). Elly starts explaining about how a man named John McRae wrote a beautiful poem (In Flanders Field, of course) and that's why poppies are associated with Veterans' Day. In the last two panels, April asks why she has to wear one, because she doesn't even know what a war is. Elly's answer is that *that* is the best reason of all.
Here's to the hope that another generation will get to grow up without a war.
