Okay, there was a recent article in Reader's Digest that talked about surgery for prenatal cases, mostly spina bifida. Today while waiting for my son at his OT, I picked up a Reader's Digest, and noticed a mention of it in the letters section. They were talking about the doctor that did the work, and had a picture of a surgery - they've opened the uterus, and a little baby hand has reached out and gripped one of the doctor's fingers.
Now, these doctors pull off amazing medical miracles, and save babies from being crippled, and that's great. But boy, the unconscious arrogance and complete dismissal of anything but doctors! The quote they had from the doctor (Dr. Joseph Bruner) about the picture was "My touch is the first human contact a baby experiences. Once I was holding his hand, I just stood there, speechless."
AGH! Excuse me? First human contact? What's the mother, an eggplant? Thanks so much, I've been in close human contact with little Thumper here for quite a while!
