It's a bit scary to me to realize how much the weather affects my moods.

Last couple of days - grey, cloudy, overcast, no sun. Me - inexplicably moody, not dealing with things as well as I think I should, despite really having a great life and lots of stuff to make me very happy.

Today - bright, clear, brisk, very sunny. Me - cheerful, extremely bouncy, having a fantastic time, despite being incredibly shorted on sleep for a couple of nights.

Warning - pointing this out to me in the middle of a cloudy overcast moody time is of limited utility. It does not make the moodiness go away, the mood is real even if it is caused by the weather.

In "I become a transparent eyeball" Emerson claimed that one's moods paint the weather. I remember thinking that he was full of beans--as you and nearly everyone I've met seem to confirm.

Though of course, different people find different weather's cheering. There's a reason I moved to the Pacific Northwest, after all.

"one's moods paint the weather"? I don't follow what he means.

Then again, I'm pretty darned sleep deprived.

The Pacific Northwest would, as I understand things, be bad for me. I definitely have troubles with seasonal affective disorder. Back in Michigan in college I was in one of the treatment studies they were doing to prove what difference the light makes.

He means that, if you're sad, no matter how glorious the weather, it will appear dismal (and vice versa)

I'm a bit freakish in my sun-aversion; though I do actually like a bit of light, I prefer it filtered and softened by atmospheric moisture.

Any chance of getting one of those "duplicates sunlight" lamps? Or otherwise seeing if it'd help?

Got one of these:
http://www.northernlighttechnologies.com/products_sadelite.php

And nowadays I even have it up on a shelf over my computer area, thanks to help from [livejournal.com profile] selenite.

Trick is realizing when to use it, and figuring out when and how much. And it helps, but it doesn't help as much as a bright sunny day.
