Of phones, ice cream, and grapes
May. 26th, 2006 05:53 pmWhew, that was a tiring afternoon.
Remember that new phone I got? The headset that I'd gotten (in a set with a case and a car charger) broke yesterday. Gah. Forget that. So I'd decided today to take it to the Cingular store down near the Walmart.
fordprfct was over hanging out and agreed to come along before he went home, to help herd kids and give me technical advice on the improved headset type I'd decided I should upgrade to. He also said he'd play Big Hulking Brute Squad Glowering Presence if need be.
Well. The local Cingular store was no help whatsoever, they couldn't do anything, we'd have to go to the nearest "corporate" store, out in Watauga. This with poor Jamie falling asleep in his stroller. Fortunately Watauga wasn't too far out of his way home, so
fordprfct said he'd stick it out, and followed me over there. We then had to wait a VERY long time to get seen. During which time we traded off, Maggie was taken on 2 bathroom runs to the PetCo (no, we can not go look at all the fish today),
fordprfct went over to the Game Spot to check on something, and we waited. Waited more. I was hot, tired, thirsty, low energy, and rapidly getting crabbier and crankier about the whole thing. He had found a case and headset that he recommended to me as good ones, and said he could help me find a car charger a lot cheaper elsewhere. Okay. FINALLY they got to us. I was ready to be cranky.
fordprfct stepped in and took over and started talking to the guy - I sensed this undercurrent of "give me what I am asking for, and you won't have to deal with the cranky lady". So much for brute squad, he was playing Good Cop. Which WORKED very quickly, so I'm totally cool with that.
So now I have a nice headset with a boom mike rather than an inline mike, and a little button that I can use to answer and hang up from the headset. Yay. And a more useful case, where I can open the phone in the case and such. Should be much more usable.
There was a Marble Slab a couple stores down, and we decided we deserved it at that point. Yummy. I got the kids strawberry ice cream (PINK ice cream, demanded Maggie) with M&Ms in a waffle bowl, as they'd really been very good through all this. Jamie was unsure about eating with the spoon at first - well, makes sense, after all, the adults weren't. Once we held up the bowl and let him lick some up, he figured it out, and then later was even going at it with two spoons, and feeding his big sister bites while he was at it. It was SO cute. I got a picture of it with the new camera phone. Just as soon as I manage to get it working so that I can send the pictures out of the phone, I'll put that one up. It makes me really proud that both Maggie and Jamie will usually share with each other, even without being prompted. Makes me feel like I've done a good job.
And after getting cooled down by chocolate ice cream with heathbar bits, and playing with the new phone accessories, I was all back down to mellowly happy again. Yay.
So then I headed back home with the kids. I virtuously stopped to put gas in the van, at the exxon out at Western Center and Blue Mound, that has a snocone stand in front and a guy doing a fruit and veggie stand at the back. Maggie has GOOD eyesight - she spotted that and started asking for "purple berries", as she calls red grapes, which she and
selenite both like. I started the gas and went to check, sure enough red grapes in the front and center, big and juicy. I used the last of my cash to get a bag. Hey, she was asking for fruit, not like the other kid I saw towing a parent to the snocone stand. She's a good kid.

Yes you have done a great job (as a mom) given this example!
Date: 2006-05-26 11:28 pm (UTC)And yes: when children share WITHOUT being prompted, well, as far I'm concerned, someone has done a darn good job in raising them in order for them to know the importance of sharing --- esp. when they learn how to extend that trait or ability to helping others who are less fortunate.
Kudos to you!
