celticdragonfly: (Firefly -River - I'll knit)

I got an email from [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver today, telling me Dez's blog was a must-read today. She's right.

Dez is talking about The Quarter Stitch, a marvelous little yarn and needlepoint store in the French Quarter. I've been there (for anybody reading me who doesn't know me well, I spent 10 years of my first 18 in Baton Rouge, so New Orleans was somewhere I went reasonably often), and it's a lovely place, and I still have a couple of skeins of luxury yarn that I dunno WHAT I'm going to do with, but they seduced their way into my hands.

The whole post is fun, but I just gotta quote some of it:
There are many reasons that sidewalk preachers don't have much luck in New Orleans, among them being:

-- you can't scare Southerners with heat.

-- you can't scare us with locusts, either. We have roaches the size of a man's thumb, and they fly.

-- you need to resolve this business about Jesus, wine and grape juice for once and for all. There's a good reason that most native New Orleanians are either Catholic or Jewish.

-- virgins, wise or foolish, are in short supply here

-- so what if the Bible says the streets of Heaven are paved with gold? Gold, schmold. We want a place to park.

-- if you think a beast with seven heads and ten horns is scary, you have obviously never been to Mardi Gras.

Nah, none of that stuff works on us.

But ... "excuse me, Mr. Sidewalk Preacher ... what was that you just said about a coat of many colors?"

Dez, thanks for the giggle. If she was on LJ I'd have metaquoted her.

Glad to hear the right music to go with the post!

Luxury yarn - scarf?

I suppose I could make it into a scarf. IIRC, without running up to the study to search it out, I have one or two skeins - I think two different colors, greens and blues, of some sorta alpaca blend.

But given my lack of success with scarves so far... that one with the Paton Kroy 3ply laceweight got shoved aside as the Scarf of Doom. I couldn't read my knitting and find my place in that pattern for anything, and it split too darned much.

The shawl is coming along nicely, but sloooowly. I'm just now starting 11-diamonds-per-section. It goes up to 15 per section, then switches to the other pattern.
