Experts uncover clue in rosacea progress

The most relevant part:
Researchers now believe they have found a key mechanism that drives rosacea, [...]

Overproduction of two inflammatory proteins results in excessive levels of a third protein that leads to rosacea symptoms, a research team reported in Sunday's online edition of the journal Nature Medicine.

The team found that small proteins called anti-microbial peptides caused the same skin symptoms that are seen in rosacea. The peptides are part of the body's immune system.

"When we then looked at patients with the disease, every one of them had far more peptides than normal," Dr. Richard L. Gallo, chief of the division of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, said in a statement.
It's another autoimmune disease!

My family are the poster children of autoimmune disease. Darn it, is there ANY medical condition that we have that ISN'T an autoimmune disease?

The trouble is, one autoimmune disease does not protect you from others. I have hypothyroidism. I have rosacea. I could end up with lupus. I really, REALLY hope not.

Um...so this means the silver lining for me is that I really, really belong to the family? (Guess this crushes the traditional "I'm really a princess who will someday be found by her real parents" fantasy most girls entertain at some point....)

Nope, I love my parents and wouldn't trade them..even if I did get the strongest genes for autoimmune diseases I've ever heard of.

I actually have 2 autoimmune diseases as well, APS and lupus. Separate beasts that wreak havoc together.

If only we'd lived in the Middle Ages, we'd have been some of the healthiest people around! (Especially me...my immune system fights off stuff it shouldn't bother fighting!)

Overachievers!
