So - there is this fannish thing, Sweet Charity, in which fans sign up to auction themselves and their skills off to raise money. The current go-round is to benefit the Writer's Guild Foundation. [livejournal.com profile] jenna_thorn posted about it here and helpfully explained things to me.

MOST of what's on there is for people to donate their skills in the area of writing, graphics, and video. But there's some fabric arts, jewelry, food and drink, and miscellaneous on there too.

Signups go until the 17th, and the auction is the 18th until the 26th.

I'm thinking of signing up. It's a cause I don't mind supporting. And honestly, I could use a bit of a revitalizing in my fiber arts right now.
  • The Cherie Amour sweater is on hold - I've figured out that I need to get measurements taken and do the figuring on how to customize it with short-rows through the bust, and I'm dreading that.
  • I was all gung-ho about a sock pattern I was designing, in three sizes, and that [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver was test-knitting one of the sizes for. It was meant to be a sock to either stretch the capabilities of a relatively inexperienced sock knitter, OR expand the possibilities for a really conservative sock wearer/recipient, for a bored knitter. I'd said that it seemed like a simple idea, like it ought to be out there already, but I'd never seen that stitch pattern before. Turned out - [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver just got a new sock book from the library, and there was a sock in it pretty much the same as mine. So oh well, dump that idea.
  • I'm working on a baby hat for a friend's baby - a pattern I designed for Alanna, that fit her well in worsted - but she had what I think was a really big head for a newborn, so I'm trying to redo it in DK weight to see if that will fit a regular newborn, and then I could write THAT up and try to publish it - but I haven't heard back on the baby's head size, and in any case, can finish that off pretty quickly.

All in all, I'm feeling a bit dispirited about my work, and could use some enthusiasm.

So - what I'm thinking I could offer up - I recently came across a pattern for a filet crochet Seal of Rassilon. (Go ahead, follow the link, look it up - I had to, even though I do enjoy Dr. Who stuff, I am no expert.) I could do that.

I'd already contacted the pattern designer to ask if I could do that for auctions - I was thinking of doing one up for Interfilk. She was fine with that. I could offer to do one in the color of the buyer's choice.

Or, you know, I could offer something else. Various people are offering scarves, one person mentioned socks. I could knit a lace bag, maybe, I've done that before. I like the idea of doing a specifically fannish thing, and most of what else I've seen is stuff like crocheted Daleks, and I dislike work with a lot of seaming.

So, what do people think?

[livejournal.com profile] 17catherines hooked me on this
It's got levels. It allows me to get competitive about my vocabulary. And the longer I play, the more rice it donates to people in third-world countries.

I'm never going to get anything else done again...
Me either. This is FUN. And oh yes, the competitive streak in me loves it. The FAQ says "There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48." HAH. I have been up to 50 (yes, briefly, but still) several times.

Calling this an exercise in English vocabulary is only true if you have first clearly admitted that English "not only borrows words from other languages; it has on occasion chased other languages down dark alley-ways, clubbed them unconscious and rifled their pockets for new vocabulary." (from [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll)

A lot of the more complex stuff I know from reading Georgette Heyer. So THERE to anyone who wants to decry the idea that romance books can be real and complex literature!
